What changed in 2026

Japan moved Indian tourist applicants onto the online e-visa (JAPAN eVISA) for short stays. Applications are filed on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal instead of through a paper form at the embassy or an accredited agency, the visa is issued electronically, and most Indian files are decided in 5 to 7 working days. The fee is unchanged at $60 (around ¥3,000 for a single-entry visa), and the maximum stay for a tourist visa remains 90 days.

Two things did not change. Japan still requires a visa for Indian passport holders, and the consulate still assesses each file on funds, travel history and purpose. The e-visa is a filing channel, not a relaxation of the rules. A weak application is refused online exactly as it was on paper.

Who can use the e-visa

The online route covers single-entry tourist visits of up to 90 days for Indian nationals resident in India. Applicants residing outside India apply through the Japanese mission covering their place of residence, which may or may not have switched to the online channel yet. Business visits, visits to friends and relatives on an invitation, and multiple-entry requests still follow the embassy process, so check the purpose before you start.

Group tours booked through a Japanese travel agency have their own package-tour route; the agency files, and travellers do not use the individual e-visa portal.

Documents you upload

The document list is the same as the paper application, uploaded as scans or photos:

• Passport bio page, valid for the full stay, with two blank pages
• A recent 45 mm by 45 mm photograph on a plain background, taken within six months
• Round-trip flight itinerary (a booking, not necessarily a paid ticket)
• Hotel reservations or an invitation letter for the full stay
• Bank statements for the last six months showing regular salary or income
• Income tax returns or Form 16 for the last two to three years
• A day-by-day travel schedule in the MOFA format
• For employed applicants, a leave letter and company ID; for students, a bonafide letter

Uploads are checked against the consulate's standard before the file is lodged. Blurry scans, statements that stop two months before travel, or a schedule that does not match the hotel bookings are the usual reasons an officer asks for more information, which restarts the clock.

Do I need biometrics or an interview

No. There is no biometric appointment and no interview for the Japan tourist e-visa. The decision is made on the documents. You may be asked to supply an additional document through the portal; respond within the stated window or the application lapses.

How long does it take

Japan publishes a five working day target once the file is complete. Vistolane cases filed from India in the current quarter have taken a median of six working days from a complete upload to the electronic visa, with a small tail of files taking ten to fifteen days during Golden Week (late April to early May) and the New Year holiday. Apply at least three weeks before travel; the visa can be filed up to three months ahead.

Common refusal reasons and how to avoid them

• Funds that do not match the trip. A two-week itinerary with a four-star hotel and a statement showing an average balance of ₹40,000 will be questioned. Show a balance that comfortably covers flights, hotels and daily spending, built up over months rather than deposited last week.
• Gaps in the schedule. Every night must have an accommodation line, and the schedule must match the hotel bookings and the flight dates.
• Thin ties to India. Employment letters, property documents or a family-dependant statement show that you will return.
• Previous overstays or refusals left undeclared. Declare them and attach the explanation.

Entering Japan with an e-visa

Print the visa issuance notice, since airlines check it at check-in and immigration officers may ask for it on arrival. Complete Visit Japan Web before you fly for immigration and customs pre-registration. The e-visa does not shorten the immigration interview at the airport; carry your hotel confirmations and return ticket.
