Who qualifies for an Ireland study visa? Students holding an unconditional letter of acceptance for a full-time programme of at least one year at a higher education institution or a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP), who have paid the fees (or at least EUR 6,000 where fees exceed that), show EUR 10,000 of living funds for the first year, hold private medical insurance and meet the English requirement (IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for degree programmes; 5.0 for English-language courses). Indian students mostly enrol in one-year master's degrees at Trinity College Dublin, UCD, University of Galway, UCC, DCU, University of Limerick, Maynooth and the technological universities, in computing, data analytics, business, pharma and engineering.

What does it cost? EUR 60 for a single-entry D visa (EUR 100 multiple entry) paid at VFS Global with its service fee of about INR 2,300. In Ireland the Irish Residence Permit costs EUR 300 at first registration and each renewal. Private medical insurance runs EUR 150 to 500 a year through the university's scheme, and tuition for international master's programmes EUR 12,000 to 25,000. How long does it take from India? About 8 weeks at the New Delhi visa office once VFS forwards the file, with the summer peak before the September intake stretching to 10 weeks; the visa office publishes weekly decision lists by reference number. Apply as soon as the acceptance letter and fee receipt are in hand, from May for a September start, and no earlier than 3 months before travel.

Acceptance, funds and the English test

The acceptance letter must be unconditional and from a provider whose programme appears on the ILEP; universities and technological universities are listed, as are approved English-language schools. The letter should state the course, duration, fees paid and the amount outstanding, and the student must have paid the full fee or at least EUR 6,000 (through the institution's account or an approved payment service) before applying. English is shown with IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo at the level the university requires, and degree-level applicants attach Class 10, 12 and bachelor's certificates with transcripts.

Living funds are EUR 10,000 for the first year, held for at least 6 months in the student's or a parent's account, through an Indian education loan sanction letter, or a scholarship, with a clear money trail for large credits. Students on courses shorter than 6 months show EUR 700 a month. A sponsor's statements and a signed declaration are accepted for parents and close relatives. Private medical insurance covering accidents and illness is required for the first year; most universities bundle a compliant policy.

The visa office also weighs genuine intention: a course that follows logically from your education or work, a realistic funding story and a clean immigration history. Gaps of more than 2 years after the last qualification need an explanation with employment evidence.

Fees and what they cover

How the application runs, step by step

1. Accept the offer and pay the fees. Full fees or at least EUR 6,000 to the institution; obtain the receipt and the acceptance letter.
2. Prepare funds and insurance. EUR 10,000 held 6 months, education loan or scholarship; private medical insurance for the first year.
3. Complete AVATS and lodge at VFS Global Ireland. Biometrics, passport, documents; pay EUR 60 and the VFS fee within 30 days of the form.
4. Decision in about 8 weeks. Check the weekly decision list; respond to any request for documents.
5. Arrive, register and start. Immigration officer stamps entry; book the Dublin registration office or local station, pay EUR 300, receive Stamp 2 and the IRP card.

After arrival: registration, work, graduate stay

Students register with immigration within 90 days of arrival for Stamp 2 and the Irish Residence Permit (EUR 300), renewed each year on proof of attendance and progression; degree students may stay on Stamp 2 for up to 7 years in total, language students up to 3. Work is permitted for 20 hours a week during term and 40 hours from June to September and from 15 December to 15 January, and a PPS number is needed for payroll. Spouses and children cannot join Stamp 2 students, which is a key difference from the UK and Canada.

Graduates of a level 8 honours degree receive Stamp 1G for 12 months and those of a level 9 or 10 (master's, PhD) for 24 months, allowing any work up to 40 hours a week while they seek an employment permit; Critical Skills Employment Permit holders can then bring family immediately, as the Ireland work route page explains. Time on Stamp 2 does not count toward long-term residence or citizenship, but Stamp 1G time counts half.
