Overview

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for an Indian remote worker costs INR 30,000 on thaievisa.go.th and is valid for 5 years with multiple entries, each allowing 180 days of stay extendable once for THB 10,000. Applicants aged 20 or over show THB 500,000, about INR 13.7 lakh, in savings held for three months and either an employment or freelance contract with a company outside Thailand or an enrolment letter from a Thai soft-power activity such as a Muay Thai camp, a cooking school, sports training or a course of medical treatment. Spouses and children under 20 join as dependants at the same INR 30,000, the embassy or consulate decides in about 10 to 15 working days, and DTV holders may not work for Thai employers.

The compact version with the price card and checklist is on the Destination Thailand Visa route page. This article explains the two tracks, how the savings rule is checked, what the 180-day rhythm means for tax and why DTV files from India are refused.

Who qualifies for the Destination Thailand Visa?

Thai soft powerParticipants in Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, music and arts festivals, seminars, Thai-language courses, medical and wellness treatment of more than 30 daysEnrolment or appointment letter from a Thai provider registered with the relevant ministryCourse can be part-time; provider must be registered
DependantsSpouse and children under 20 of a DTV holderMarriage or birth certificate with MEA apostille; main applicant's DTVSame INR 30,000 fee; no separate funds

The DTV was launched on 15 July 2024 and is aimed at people who were previously stringing together exempt entries and tourist visas. It is not a work permit: the Immigration Bureau and the Department of Employment treat any work for a Thai company or Thai clients, paid or unpaid, as illegal on the DTV. Remote employees of Indian IT firms, consultants with foreign clients, traders working their own accounts and founders of companies registered outside Thailand all fit the workcation track; people who want to open a Thai business need a Non-B and a Thai company instead.

How is the THB 500,000 savings rule checked?

The embassy wants THB 500,000 in the applicant's own name in savings or fixed deposits, with statements for the last three months showing the balance throughout, not a transfer made the week before. Joint accounts with a spouse are accepted when both apply; accounts in a parent's name are not. The Mumbai and New Delhi missions also ask for the remote work contract or a letter from the employer confirming the role, salary and permission to work remotely, a company registration certificate for the foreign employer, and, for freelancers, a portfolio, invoices and client contracts of at least six months. Soft-power applicants attach the provider's enrolment letter, payment receipt and registration, and a medical track needs the hospital's treatment plan.

How does the application run?

  • Season the funds: hold THB 500,000 (about INR 13.7 lakh) in savings for at least three months and download statements for the whole period.
  • Assemble the track evidence: employment contract and employer letter or freelance contracts and portfolio; or the Thai provider's enrolment letter, receipt and registration.
  • Apply on thaievisa.go.th choosing "Destination Thailand Visa" and the mission for your state; upload the passport, photo, funds, track evidence, proof of residence and the dependants' apostilled certificates; pay INR 30,000 each.
  • The embassy or consulate reviews the file in about 10 to 15 working days and often requests clarification of the remote work or the course; respond within the deadline given.
  • File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card and enter; the officer stamps 180 days. Extend once for THB 10,000 before the stamp expires, or leave and re-enter for a fresh 180 days.

How long does it take from India?

StageTypical time
Seasoning the funds3 months
Documents1 to 2 weeks
Embassy processingAbout 10 to 15 working days
TravelAny time in the 5-year validity

Apply at least a month before travel. The visa's validity runs from issue, so there is no reason to apply far in advance of the first trip.

Living on the DTV: the 180-day rhythm, tax and family

Each entry allows 180 days; a THB 10,000 extension adds 180 more, after which a border crossing resets the count. Immigration officers have started questioning holders who stay 360 days and return the next day, so plan a real trip home or around the region. Anyone present 180 days or more in a calendar year becomes Thai tax resident, and under Revenue Department Order P.161/2566 foreign income remitted to Thailand in the year earned is taxable at 5 to 35 per cent with credit under the India-Thailand treaty; income left in an Indian account is not taxed in Thailand. Dependants may attend Thai or international schools, and a spouse who wants to work for a Thai employer needs a Non-B and work permit, as the Thailand work visa guide explains.

The DTV does not lead to permanent residence because it is not an extendable one-year status; remote professionals earning USD 80,000 a year who want a path to settlement should compare the 10-year LTR visa (INR 140,000, digital work permit, 17 per cent flat tax for highly skilled professionals), and the Thailand visa-free entry guide covers short visits.

Why are DTV applications refused, and what fixes each reason?

Funds not seasoned. A transfer of THB 500,000 the week before applying. Hold the balance for three months and show the full statement history.

Remote work unconvincing. A letter from a small Indian firm without registration, or freelance claims without invoices. Attach the employer's registration and a detailed letter; freelancers add six months of invoices and contracts.

Thai clients or employer. The work described involves Thai companies. Describe only foreign clients; Thai work needs a Non-B and work permit.

Provider not registered. A soft-power course from a gym or school without ministry registration. Choose providers that issue registration numbers and official enrolment letters.

Dependant documents. Marriage or birth certificates without apostille or in a regional language. Apostille through the MEA and attach English translations.

Questions, answered

How much does the Destination Thailand Visa cost for Indians?

INR 30,000 per applicant, including each spouse and child, paid online on thaievisa.go.th to the Royal Thai Embassy or consulate for your state; the visa is valid five years with multiple entries. In Thailand a one-off 180-day extension costs THB 10,000 at the Immigration Bureau, and no re-entry permit is needed.

Can I work in Thailand on the DTV?

Only remotely, for employers or clients outside Thailand, including Indian companies; the DTV does not allow employment with a Thai company, local freelance clients or running a Thai business. Anyone hired in Thailand needs a Non-immigrant B visa and a work permit, or a SMART or LTR visa.

How much bank balance is needed for the DTV?

THB 500,000, about INR 13.7 lakh, in savings in the applicant's own name, with statements showing the balance for at least three months before applying; fixed deposits and salary accounts count, mutual funds and shares usually do not. The embassy also asks for the remote work contract or course enrolment and a short description of the work.

Do DTV holders pay tax in Thailand?

Anyone present 180 days or more in a calendar year is Thai tax resident, and under the Revenue Department's interpretation in force since 1 January 2024 foreign income remitted to Thailand in the year it is earned is taxable at 5 to 35 per cent, with credit under the India-Thailand treaty. Income kept abroad is not taxed in Thailand; a tax adviser should confirm the position before long stays.
