Italy's digital nomad visa, open since April 2024, admits highly qualified remote workers and freelancers who earn about EUR 28,000 a year (three times the health-care exemption threshold; consulates apply EUR 25,500 to 30,000), hold a degree or three years of professional experience with at least six months of remote work, and have health insurance, accommodation and a clean record. The type D visa costs EUR 116 at VFS Global Italy, decisions take one to three months, and the residence permit (about EUR 116) is issued for a year and renewed while the conditions hold. Spouses and children join through family cohesion, and Italy taxes residents after 183 days with the impatriate regime available to many.
Who qualifies for Italy's digital nomad visa? Non-EU citizens who work remotely with digital tools, either as employees of a company outside Italy (including Indian employers) or as freelancers for clients outside Italy, and who count as highly qualified: a university degree, a recognised professional qualification or three years of professional experience, plus at least six months of remote work in the role. Income of about EUR 28,000 a year, health insurance covering Italy for the whole stay, proof of accommodation and no conviction in the last five years for immigration or labour offences complete the test; the employer declares it has no such convictions.
What does it cost? EUR 116 for the type D visa at VFS (plus the service fee of about INR 2,000). In Italy the residence permit kit costs EUR 70.46 plus EUR 16 stamp and EUR 30 postage with a EUR 40 contribution, about EUR 156 in total, and the permit is renewed yearly at the same cost. Health insurance covering Italy costs EUR 300 to 1,000 a year, and registering with the national health service is possible for EUR 2,000 a year once resident.
How long does it take from India? The consulates in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata examine remote-work files closely and take one to three months, within the 90 days the law allows; the first wave of applications in 2024 and 2025 was slowed by requests for employer declarations and tax documents. Apply two to four months before the planned move, after assembling 12 months of income evidence.

The law sets income at three times the annual threshold for exemption from health-care co-payments, which moves each year: the Ministry's portal illustrates the formula with EUR 24,789, consulates in 2026 quote EUR 25,500 to 30,000 and most practitioners work to EUR 28,000. Indian applicants should budget for EUR 30,000 to be safe, shown as regular credits from the employer or clients over the last 12 months with the Indian income tax return. Employees need a letter from the employer confirming the remote arrangement, the salary and that the company has no convictions; freelancers show contracts, invoices and GST or MSME registration.
The visa is for people who will live in Italy while working for the rest of the world; work for Italian clients is not covered beyond incidental amounts, and anyone hired by an Italian company moves to a work permit. Spouses and children do not apply at the same time: once the nomad holds the residence permit they apply for family cohesion in Italy or reunification from India with the same income rules as other residents.

Anyone present 183 days or more in a calendar year is tax resident in Italy on worldwide income at 23 to 43 per cent, with credit under the India-Italy treaty; new residents who have not been Italian tax resident in the previous three years can claim the impatriate regime, which exempts 50 per cent of employment or self-employment income up to EUR 600,000 for five years for qualifying workers. Freelancers register a partita IVA and may use the 15 per cent flat regime up to EUR 85,000 of revenue in some cases. Employees of Indian companies need the employer to address Italian social security, which the India-Italy social security agreement eases for postings.
The permit is renewed yearly while the income, insurance and remote work continue, and time counts fully toward the five years for the EU long-term residence permit. Spouses and children join through family cohesion with the social allowance income test, and children attend state schools free. Nomads who take an Italian job convert to a work permit, including the EU Blue Card.
