Wrong main destination
More nights in Italy or France than in Switzerland.
The fix. Apply to the country with the most nights; Switzerland only when it leads.
Switzerland is in Schengen but not the EU, so Indian citizens use the ordinary Schengen type C visa: the EUR 90 fee is collected in Swiss francs (CHF 90; CHF 45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6) at VFS Global Switzerland centres, decided by the Embassy in New Delhi or the consulates in Mumbai and Bengaluru within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. Switzerland asks for about CHF 100 a day in funds (CHF 30 for students with a sponsor), EUR 30,000 of insurance and a passport issued within 10 years, and Indian travellers mostly combine it with Italy, France or Germany, in which case the country with the most nights decides. The multi-entry cascade for India applies here too. For the general Schengen rules, 90-in-180 counting and refusal appeals, see the Schengen hub guides linked below.
Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland? Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders need a Schengen type C visa for tourism, skiing, business meetings, conferences, medical visits and family visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa issued by Switzerland is valid across all 29 Schengen states, and Switzerland must be the main destination by nights (or first entry when equal). Stays over 90 days, study, work and family reunification need a national type D visa plus a cantonal permit, covered on the other Switzerland route pages.
What does it cost? CHF 90 for adults and CHF 45 for children aged 6 to 11 (free under 6), the Swiss-franc equivalent of the EUR 90 Schengen fee, paid in rupees at VFS at the embassy rate (about INR 9,500 in 2026), plus the VFS service fee of about INR 2,700 and optional courier. The fee is not refunded on refusal. Vistolane charges the CHF 90 fee at the official rate and shows its service separately.
How long does it take from India? 15 calendar days by the Visa Code, extendable to 45; the Swiss missions in India typically decide in 7 to 15 days outside the peak and 15 to 30 days from April to July and in December, when the Alps and Indian school holidays coincide. VFS appointments can take 2 to 4 weeks to find in peak season, so start 6 to 8 weeks before travel and no earlier than 6 months.

Swiss missions apply the common Schengen tests (purpose, funds, insurance, intention to return) but with their own reference figures: about CHF 100 per day of stay for a tourist, shown on 3 months of bank statements with salary slips and the income tax return, or CHF 30 a day when a host in Switzerland signs a formal declaration of sponsorship (Verpflichtungserklärung) through the cantonal migration office, which binds the host for costs up to CHF 30,000. Hotel bookings for every night, train or car plans and a return flight are expected, and ski and hiking trips should match the season.
Indian travellers often enter Switzerland on an Italian, French or German visa: that is allowed only if the other country is the main destination by nights. A 10-night trip with 6 nights in Switzerland and 4 in Italy must be filed with Switzerland at VFS Switzerland, whatever the arrival airport. Under the Schengen cascade for India, two visas used in 3 years earn a 2-year multiple-entry visa and then a 5-year one at the same fee.

Officers at Zurich and Geneva check the visa, bookings, insurance and funds; Switzerland takes part in the EU Entry/Exit System, so entries are recorded biometrically. Visitors may attend meetings and conferences but may not work; a Schengen visa cannot be converted into a Swiss permit from inside the country except for marriage to a Swiss or settled resident.
