Indian students admitted to ETH Zurich, EPFL, a cantonal university, a university of applied sciences or an accredited private school apply at VFS Global Switzerland for a national type D visa (CHF 88): the file goes to the cantonal migration office for approval, which asks for proof of about CHF 21,000 a year in funds, the admission letter, accommodation, a motivation letter and a commitment to leave after the studies, and the whole process takes 8 to 12 weeks. On arrival the student registers within 14 days for a B permit, may work 15 hours a week after 6 months (full time in holidays), and graduates of Swiss universities get 6 months to find a job that qualifies them for a work permit outside the quota.
Who qualifies for a Switzerland student visa? Students with an unconditional admission from a recognised Swiss institution (the two federal institutes ETH Zurich and EPFL, the cantonal universities of Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basel, St. Gallen and others, universities of applied sciences, and accredited private hotel and business schools) for a full-time programme, who show funds of about CHF 21,000 for the first year, accommodation, health insurance and a written undertaking to leave Switzerland at the end of the course. Indian students most often enrol in master's degrees in engineering, computer science, finance and hospitality; English-taught master's programmes usually ask for IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 and a strong bachelor's record.
What does it cost? CHF 88 for the national D visa at VFS Global Switzerland (plus its service fee of about INR 2,700), then the cantonal B permit at CHF 65 to 160 depending on the canton, renewed yearly. Swiss health insurance is mandatory (CHF 100 to 150 a month for students on a discounted plan, or an approved international student policy). Public tuition is low: ETH and EPFL charge about CHF 730 to 780 a semester for internationals, cantonal universities CHF 500 to 4,000 a semester, private hotel schools far more. Vistolane charges the CHF 88 fee at the official rate and shows the permit and insurance separately.
How long does it take from India? 8 to 12 weeks in total: VFS forwards the file to the Swiss mission, which sends it to the cantonal migration office; the canton's approval returns to the mission and the visa is issued. Zurich and Vaud often decide in 6 to 8 weeks for ETH and EPFL students; smaller cantons can take 12 weeks. Lodge in May or June for a September start and no later than early July.

Unlike most Schengen states, the Swiss decision is cantonal: the migration office of the canton where the institution sits approves the stay before the mission issues the visa, and each canton publishes its own funds figure, generally CHF 21,000 a year (Zurich and Geneva) and never below CHF 18,000. Funds can be a bank balance in the student's or a parent's name, a Swiss blocked account, a formal guarantee from a solvent person in Switzerland, an Indian education loan sanction letter or a scholarship such as the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship or an ETH Excellence award.
The file includes a signed motivation letter and curriculum vitae, the admission letter, academic certificates (Class 10, 12, bachelor's with transcripts), the language certificate, proof of accommodation (student housing confirmation or a rental contract), health insurance or a commitment to buy Swiss insurance, and a declaration that you will leave Switzerland at the end of your studies; the canton may invite you to an interview at the mission. Students under 18 need the parents' consent.
Language and private schools: German-, French- or Italian-taught programmes need B2 to C1 in that language; private business and hotel schools must be accredited and some cantons cap stays at 8 years of total study.

Students admitted to ETH or EPFL should lodge in May; cantonal approvals slow down in July when offices take summer leave.
The B permit is renewed each year on proof of enrolment and progress, and students may work up to 15 hours a week after 6 months of residence (full time in semester breaks), with the employer applying for the work authorisation; doctoral students and research assistants employed by the university may work from the first day. Spouses and children can apply for family reunification only if the student shows sufficient income and housing, which most cantons accept for doctoral students and rarely for master's students.
Graduates of a Swiss university, university of applied sciences or federal institute receive a 6-month B permit to look for work, and a job of high scientific or economic interest (engineering, IT, pharma, finance, research) can be approved outside the third-country quota and without a labour-market test; the Switzerland work route page explains the permit types. Years of study count half toward the 10 years required for the C settlement permit.
