Why Singapore visas get refused: 25 reasons across 5 routes, each with the fix, written from the official rules and verified.
Visitor e-Visa: refusal reasons and the fix
Singapore Visitor e-Visa, government fee SGD 30 per person; verified against ica.gov.sg. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Insufficient supporting documents
Missing statements, bookings or a photo that failed ICA's checks; agents lodging incomplete files.
The fix. Submit complete documents through a reputable authorised agent; Vistolane's partner checks the file before lodging.
Travel history or profile
First-time travellers with little history, irregular income or recent large deposits.
The fix. Show regular income, a clear itinerary and ties in India; a local contact's Letter of Introduction strengthens the file.
Previous immigration record
Overstay, refusal of entry or an outstanding fine in Singapore.
The fix. Settle fines through ICA and disclose the history; reapply with a short, specific trip.
Sponsor or local contact issues
The local contact did not meet the age or status rule, or the LOI was not signed.
The fix. Use an eligible local contact or an authorised agent instead.
Entry refused at the checkpoint
No return ticket, no accommodation proof or inconsistent answers to the officer.
The fix. Carry printouts of the ticket, booking and e-Visa and answer consistently; the visa itself does not guarantee entry.
Student's Pass: refusal reasons and the fix
Singapore Student's Pass, government fee SGD 105 (SGD 45 processing + SGD 60 issuance); verified against ica.gov.sg. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Institution or course not approved
A private institution without EduTrust certification or a part-time course.
The fix. Enrol only in approved full-time courses; check the institution's EduTrust status before paying tuition.
Financial support unclear
No evidence of tuition and living funds, or a sponsor without income proof.
The fix. Submit statements showing regular funds, the loan sanction letter or scholarship award with the e-Form.
Immigration history
Previous overstay, refused entry or a pass cancelled for breach.
The fix. Disclose and explain; a stronger institution and complete documents help.
Documents or photo rejected
Translations missing, certificates not matching the passport name or a non-compliant photo.
The fix. Use notarised translations, align names and follow the ICA photo guidelines.
IPA lapsed
The student did not enter and complete formalities before the IPA expired.
The fix. Travel within the IPA validity or ask the institution to request an extension before it lapses.
Employment Pass and S Pass: refusal reasons and the fix
Singapore Employment Pass and S Pass, government fee SGD 330 (SGD 105 application + SGD 225 issuance); verified against ica.gov.sg. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Salary below the floor or COMPASS below 40
The offer was under SGD 5,600 (or the age-adjusted figure), or the firm's diversity and local-share scores pulled the total below 40.
The fix. Raise the salary or rely on shortage occupation bonus points; S Pass may fit a mid-level role.
Fair Consideration Framework not met
The job was not advertised for 14 days or the employer is on MOM's watchlist.
The fix. Complete the advertisement or document an exemption; watchlisted firms face longer scrutiny.
Qualification not verified
The screening provider could not confirm the degree, or the institution is not accredited.
The fix. Provide transcripts and the university's registrar contact; unverifiable degrees score zero on COMPASS.
Quota or levy (S Pass)
The employer's S Pass quota is full.
The fix. Wait for quota to free up, or reclassify the role to an Employment Pass if the salary allows.
Adverse record
Previous pass cancellation for breach, overstay or a criminal record.
The fix. Disclose and explain with documents; some cases are referred for additional review.
Dependant's Pass and Long-Term Visit Pass: refusal reasons and the fix
Singapore Dependant's Pass and Long-Term Visit Pass, government fee SGD 330 per dependant (SGD 105 + SGD 225); verified against ica.gov.sg. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Sponsor salary below SGD 6,000
The fixed monthly salary on the pass is under the threshold or includes variable allowances.
The fix. Request a fixed-salary revision from the employer or wait for a renewal at the higher salary.
Relationship not evidenced
Marriage certificate not registered, translations missing or a common-law relationship without cohabitation proof.
The fix. Register the marriage, obtain notarised translations and compile relationship evidence.
Sponsor's pass not issued
Dependants' passes cannot be issued before the main pass.
The fix. Complete the sponsor's issuance first; the dependants' IPAs remain valid for six months.
Parents' file
Sponsor below SGD 12,000 or medical examination not completed.
The fix. Meet the salary rule and complete the medical within the IPA validity.
Adverse record
A dependant's previous overstay or refused entry.
The fix. Disclose and explain with documents.
Permanent residence: refusal reasons and the fix
Singapore Permanent residence, government fee SGD 100 per applicant; verified against ica.gov.sg. The route page carries the eligibility test, fees, timeline and document checklist these reasons refer to.
Too early or short history
Applied at six months with a single tax year and no family in Singapore.
The fix. Reapply after two years with Notices of Assessment, a stable employer and family included.
Salary or sector weight
Salary near the pass floor in a sector with ample local supply.
The fix. Progress in salary and role, or add a Singapore-recognised qualification before reapplying.
Weak ties
No family, no community involvement and frequent long absences.
The fix. Show integration: children in local schools, volunteering, continuous residence.
Incomplete documents
Missing tax assessments, unverified degree or untranslated certificates.
The fix. Upload complete, translated documents; the portal does not accept late additions.
Re-entry permit lapsed (existing PRs)
PR lost after staying abroad with an expired REP.
The fix. Apply for a new PR under the applicable scheme; keep the REP valid when travelling.
Questions, answered
Can I reapply after a Singapore visa refusal?
In most systems yes, straight away and with a new government fee: the refusal letter lists the grounds, and a fresh application that answers each ground usually does better than an appeal, which only some routes offer (for example UK family visas and Australian onshore decisions). A few decisions carry a bar, typically for false documents or statements, so read the letter for any time limit before paying again.
Is the government fee refunded after a Singapore visa refusal?
Almost never. Government fees pay for the decision, not the outcome, and visa application centre charges are not returned either. Japan is the exception among the countries here: its visa fee is collected only when the visa is issued. Vistolane's filing fee is refunded under the on-time guarantee, not for a refusal.
Does a refusal affect my next application or other countries?
You must declare it. Every major application form asks about previous refusals, and an undeclared refusal is itself a ground for refusal; in the United Kingdom deception in an application can bring a 10-year ban. A declared refusal with a short explanation and the corrected evidence is routine and is read as a fixed file, not a weak one.
How does Vistolane help after a refusal?
The refile flow in the applicant portal lists the grounds from the letter, maps each one to the document or fact that answers it, reuses the documents that were already fine and files again; the free eligibility check shows your band before you pay a new government fee, and licence-checked partners handle appeals where a route offers one.
