A student visa is granted against an unconditional offer from a licensed institution plus proof you can pay tuition and living costs for the first year. Because universities sponsor the application, the college's compliance record and your own academic progression are weighed alongside your bank statements.

Post-study work rights differ sharply: the UK Graduate visa gives two years, Canada's PGWP up to three, Australia's 485 two to four depending on the qualification, while the US relies on OPT. The right destination is often decided by the work-rights window rather than the tuition fee.

Who this route suits

Students holding an unconditional offer from an institution on the destination's licensed-sponsor list, with first-year tuition and living costs already in the family's account (or an education-loan sanction letter) and an academic record that makes the chosen course a logical next step. Typical fits: a bachelor's graduate moving to a master's in Canada, the UK or Australia; a Class 12 finisher with an IELTS or PTE score heading to an undergraduate degree; a working professional doing a one-year specialist master's in Germany or Ireland.

The route is weaker for applicants with long study gaps and no work in between, a course that steps down from a previous qualification, or funds parked with a third party the officer cannot connect to you. Decide the destination by its post-study work window and the part-time hours allowed while you study, not by the agent's commission.

Does this route fit you? Three questions:

• Do you hold an offer, even a conditional one, from an institution licensed to sponsor international students? If not: Without an offer there is nothing to file yet; campus visits and interviews are done on a visitor visa.
• Can you show first-year tuition plus the destination's published living-cost figure, held for the required period, or a loan sanction letter? If not: Funds are the most common student refusal. The check tells you the exact figure and holding period for your destination.
• Is the course a logical next step from your last qualification, with no unexplained gaps? If not: If you are already working in the field, a sponsored work visa or a job-seeker route may fit better than stepping back into study.

How the process works

1. Secure the offer. An unconditional offer or CAS/I-20/COE from an institution licensed to sponsor international students.
2. Prove funds. Tuition for year one plus the published living-cost figure, held for 28 days or more in most systems.
3. Language and health. IELTS/PTE/TOEFL where required, tuberculosis test for some passports, health insurance or surcharge.
4. File and biometrics. Submit within the institution's deadline, attend biometrics, then collect the visa before the course start date.

Why applications get refused

• Funds held for fewer days than the rule requires, or in a third party's name without a sponsorship letter
• Gap in study history or a course that is not a clear academic progression
• Wrong course level for the visa route (for example diploma vs degree)
• Missed course start date because the application was filed late
